Let’s Talk About Money: Why Opening Up Matters

Each year, Talk Money Week encourages people across the UK to start honest, open conversations about their finances, from pocket money to pensions.

Organised annually by the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS), the campaign’s aim is simple: to help everyone feel more comfortable talking about money, and to keep those conversations going all year round.

Ultimately, Talk Money Week is about breaking down barriers.

Because when we talk about money, we don’t just share tips or experiences, we build confidence, reduce stigma, and take real steps toward better financial wellbeing.

Why Don’t We Talk About Money?

For many people, money remains one of the last “taboo” topics.

From an early age, we’re often taught that discussing finances is impolite or uncomfortable. As a result, many of us grow up avoiding those conversations altogether.

Whether it’s the fear of being judged, a lack of financial confidence, or not knowing where to start, the outcome is often the same — silence.

That silence can have a real impact. When we avoid talking about money, we also miss opportunities to learn from others, share experiences, and ask for help. Over time, this can lead to stress, anxiety, and a sense of losing control.

Breaking that silence is crucial. Creating spaces where people can talk openly and without judgement is the first step toward better financial health.

Talking About Money Supports Financial Wellbeing

Money conversations aren’t just about numbers. They’re about awareness, confidence, and connection.

When people feel safe to talk about their financial worries, goals, and decisions, they gain a clearer picture of where they are and where they want to be.

Even small, honest conversations can have a big impact. By opening up, people start to plan ahead more effectively, take greater control of their choices, and make more informed decisions. Over time, these positive steps contribute to stronger financial wellbeing, that sense of feeling secure, supported, and capable when it comes to money.

True financial wellbeing doesn’t mean wealth; it means peace of mind.

And that journey always begins with a conversation.

Supporting Talk Money Week in Birmingham

This week, Lifetime were proud to support a brand-new city-wide initiative aimed at tackling Birmingham’s cost-of-living crisis, running alongside Talk Money Week.

We joined the Brum Financial Futures 2025 event at Birmingham’s STEAMhouse, providing real money help through financial education, planning, free workshops, and keynote sessions.

Brum Financial Futures 2025 is a free event for Birmingham residents, designed to offer practical and immediate financial support, from budgeting and everyday spending to long-term planning and future-proofing finances.

Led by Birmingham City CouncilMaPS, and ANDCP, alongside a group of local organisations and businesses, the event forms part of the city’s response to ongoing economic challenges.

As part of our contribution, Lifetime provided a free financial plan to all delegates and delivered two interactive workshops:

  • Mid-Career Financial Planning
  • Money Myths to Confidence

Both sessions encouraged attendees to think differently about their money habits, plan for their futures, and feel empowered to take practical steps toward financial confidence.

Lifetime’s COO Andy Wealthall was also part of various panels on the day and pre-recorded sessions, including: Preparing for life events, FOMO and the money misinformation trap and can AI be a tool to close the poverty gap.

We were proud to meet hundreds of residents, hear their experiences, and share real, actionable advice. Being part of events like this is at the core of our mission, helping people make sense of money through education, guidance, and genuine human connection.

Start the Conversation

This Talk Money Week, we’re encouraging everyone, individuals, teams, and businesses, to start a conversation about money.

It could be as simple as asking a colleague how they budget, talking to your children about saving, or checking in with your partner about shared goals. The more we talk about money, the more confident and connected we become.

And if you’re a business looking to support your people’s financial wellbeing, we’re here to help.

Get in touch with our team today to find out how we can support your employees with practical financial education, personalised guidance, and wellbeing programmes that make a lasting difference.
